Alex Whitlow

Head Archery

Alex was born and raised in Los Angeles, but now lives in Salt Lake City, Utah when he's not in Kingston attending Queen's University. He has just completed his fourth year in honors art history and is returning in the fall in preparation for architecture school. Alex has always had a passion for the visual arts and graphic design and hopes to one day apply these traits to a career in architecture. This will be Alex's first Arowhon experience, but he is excited for the upcoming season and can't wait to share his love for archery with others. At Queen's Alex is an active member of Queen's Players, a popular sketch comedy show raising money for local charities. Alex has been working with kids since high school, from instructing lacrosse, leading improv workshops, to participating in a mentorship program. He just completed a year-long management position within Queens' student government, the Alma Mater Society alongside fellow Arowhon staff member Chris Gray, where together they were challenged to guide an entirely student-run business to success. Alex looks forward to bringing his undying enthusiasm, and fun loving attitude to Arowhon this summer!

 
Allan Ottaway

Co-Head Surf

Allan Ottaway, most call him Otto is celebrating his 15th summer at Camp Arowhon. Otto began his career as a Junior Boy and since then he has excelled as a counsellor, a surfing instructor and most recently our program director. Otto graduated from Queens University and is now completing a Masters in Economics at the University of Ottawa. In 2008, Allan took a year off to concentrate on his schooling, but is extremely excited to return to us this summer as Co-Head of Surfing. Look out surfers, Otto is back!

 
Andrea Basen

Head Ride

Andrea is from Toronto and is currently studying Biology at the University of Guelph. Andrea is very much looking forward to spending her third year at Arowhon! Before coming to Arowhon, Andrea worked as a counsellor and riding instructor at Cedar Valley Ranch, and Whitchurch Riding Academy. In Guelph Andrea is very involved in extra-curricular activities. She plays for the varsity women’s rugby team and is an avid member of the intramural hockey, soccer and water-polo teams. Aside from Andrea’s athletic involved, she is also an active member of the Jewish students’ organization and the Guelph equestrian club. Horses have always been her passion and Andrea is so excited to work with all aspiring equestrians at Arowhon this summer. We look forward to having Andrea bring her beaming smile, warmth and enthusiasm back to the barn again this summer as Head Ride.

 
Becky Sklar

Head Drama

From Toronto, Becky currently attends Queen’s University pursuing a degree in Arts and Science. She is a member of Queen’s Hillel as well as Queen’s Dance Club. This summer will be Becky’s fourth year on staff and prior to that she was a camper at Arowhon for seven years. This will be Becky’s second summer as our Drama Instructor and we are looking forward to seeing her continue to direct and manage Arowhon’s diverse singing and acting talent. Becky is extremely caring, helpful and creative, and we are very excited that she will be returning as our head drama.

 
Ben Kates

Head Canoe

Ben Kates simply loves camp and this will be his eleventh summer at Arowhon. Over the last decade Ben has excelled as a camper and staff. While not at camp, he attends the University of Guelph in the integrated Arts and Science program. His interests lie mainly in the sciences, especially in biology. Ben’s camp career can be defined by his relation to the canoe dock. Ben began going to the dock as junior boy and over the years eventually earned his high class awards and established his reputation as one of the most accomplished canoeists at camp. Since becoming staff, Ben has remained dedicated to the canoeing program and as an instructor has been able to teach and inspire future generations of Arowhon canoeists. Ben comes back to camp because he loves teaching, but also recognizes that he learns from the campers as well. With such a mentality and dedication to teaching it’s no wonder that we are looking forward to having Ben back at camp with us this summer as our Head Canoeing Instructor.

 
Bronwen Coulthard

Head High-Ropes

Bronwen is coming to Arowhon for the first time this year from Halifax, Nova Scotia. She studies geography at Mount Allison University, with the hopes of teaching in the future. During the school year Bronwen participates in SMILE, an early intervention program which supports children with disabilities. She was also a member of her residence executive this year as the Social Chair. Bronwen has been attending camp since she was eight and worked as a counsellor for two years. Arowhon will be her first experience of camp outside Nova Scotia.

 
Cameron Johnson

Head Guitar

Cameron lives in Kingston, Ontario having recently moved from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario where he completed his High School years.  He is attends Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia as a music student in vocal performance/musical theatre.  Over the past several years Cameron attended the Gould Lake Outdoor Centre programs learning wilderness survival, canoeing and leadership skills.  He also was very involved with musical theatre in Sault Ste. Marie and Acadia, having been cast with roles such as Gavroche in Les Miserable, Munkustrap in Cats, The Artful Dodger in Oliver, Pippin in Pippin and Peter in Hanzel and Gretel.   Cameron has been involved with voice, piano and guitar lessons for several years and is a very accomplished musician.  He is very excited about sharing his guitar skills with the campers.   

 
Carl Raven

Head Tennis

Carl is from Southend which is about 30 miles outside of London in the UK.  He recently completed his final year of university, receiving an International Business degree at London Metropolitan University. In the past, Carl has done a charity 10,000 foot skydive for Teenage Cancer Trust and has been involved with coaching a local children’s soccer team. In his spare time Carl enjoys playing tennis, badminton, and running. Carl has won various Business awards including Chartered Institute of Marketing Award for the South East of England and has won a number of soccer awards. This will be Carl’s second summer at Camp and we are very excited to have him back as our tennis instructor.

 
Crystal Schultz

Head Swim (Girls)

Crystal currently attends Trent University and majors in psychology. In the future, Crystal hopes to become a communicative disorders assistant. She currently works as a lifeguard and swimming instructor at two pools in Oshawa. She also volunteers at a youth group for individuals with special needs and has extensive camping experience. Crystal is looking forward to the staff experience at Arowhon and spending time in Algonquin park. Given Crystal’s widespread teaching and guarding experience, we are confident that the Girl’s Swim dock will be a safe and rewarding environment this summer.

 
Daniel Rumack

Head Land Sports

Daniel Rumack is from Toronto and currently attends Brock University. This will be his third summer on staff. Daniel began his camp career as a junior boy and over the years has been a constant source of friendship and entertainment for all around him. Daniel’s commitment and light hearted demeanor make him a strong and dedicated staff member. We are excited to watch the landsports program flourish under his guidance this summer.

 
Julia Carlson

Co-Head Surf

Julia Carlson is from Denver, Colorado and attends Queen’s University.  Julia began her summers at Arowhon as an inter girl.  Outside camp Julia has worked with underprivileged children helping them to complete their homework and improve their English and volunteered for a charity run by her high school providing food for the disadvantaged members of her community.  Julia stays active cross country skiing, snowboarding and doing yoga.  This will be Julia’s first summer as a head instructor and we are looking forward to watching her bring her leadership and experience of the surf dock.

 
Kyle Florence

Head Swim (Boys)

This will be Kyle’s fourth summer on staff at Arowhon. After having been a camper for six summers, it has been rewarding to watch Kyle develop into the strong and caring staff member he is celebrated and recognized as. Kyle currently attends Queen’s University. Last summer Kyle worked as a counsellor in our Junior Boys section, has experience as a counsellor in our Special Needs Program, was one of three Colour War co-coordinators. We know that Kyle’s creative nature and energetic personality will make the Boy’s dock a favourite for all campers this summer.

 
Max Muszynski

Head Sail

From Toronto, Max is a student at University of Guelph. Max has been part of Arowhon for his whole life, as the son of directors Joanne Kates and Leon Muszynski. Last summer, Max’s leadership ability allowed the sailing program to be one of the most successful activities at camp. Prior to being a head instructor, Max was a counsellor in the inter boys section and a sail specialist. Outside camp Max plays hockey and enjoys being physically active. This is his twelfth summer “officially” at camp. We look forward to having Max’s leadership, creativity and fun personality on the sail dock this summer as our Head Sailing Instructor.

 
Rochelle Basen

Head Nature

Rochelle is from Toronto and studies philosophy at the University of King's College in Halifax. Although this will be Rochelle's first summer at Arowhon, she has spent the past four summers working with children at the Cleveland’s House Resort and at Bayview Glen Day Camp. In Halifax, Rochelle volunteers with a society that raises money for local women's charities and with an international outreach group for visiting exchange students. Next year Rochelle's studies are taking her to Denmark where she will participate in a semester abroad. Because of Rochelle’s commitment to the environment and dedication to campers we are very excited to have her leading camp's Nature program.

 
Sam Kirshner

Co-Head Surf

This summer will be Sam’s twelfth summer at camp and fourth year as a surf instructor. He is currently in pursuit of his master’s degree at Queens University in business management and logistics. Sam first started at Arowhon as a junior boy and it has been great to watch his development into the strong and positive leader that he is today. During his years on staff Sam has worked as a counsellor in Inter Boys, a climbing instructor and on the windsurfing dock. Sam’s positive teaching style has allowed the surf dock to be one of the most popular and successful docks at camp.

 
Sara Melvin

Head Arts and Crafts

Sara is from Toronto and currently attends Queen’s University in Kingston in pursuit of a Bachelor of Arts degree. Outside of school, Sara volunteers at the Kaleidoscope Big Buddies Program at Queen’s, is an active member of the Queen’s gymnastics team, and Queen’s Hillel. In addition, Sara enjoys being active by playing soccer and swimming. Sara was a camper at Arowhon for five summers, and we are excited to welcome Sara’s energetic, enthusiastic and fun personality back on staff for a fourth year as our Head Arts and Crafts Instructor.

 
Tim Northam

Head Kayak

Tim is originally from Birmingham, UK. He studied Business Economics in Cardiff, and moved to Wales for just over seven years. He loves the outdoors both in Wales and throughout the UK exploring the national parks on foot, mountain bikes, climbing and in kayaks down the rivers and on lakes. He has worked in many after school clubs and youth centres organising sports, day trips and arts & crafts during my time in Wales. He has supported a winter night shelter for the homeless for the last three years serving up in a soup kitchen in London. He has also volunteered as a mentor in a local secondary school supporting their choices in education. He has been active since he was young regularly swimming, running different charity fun runs, playing squash and five a-side football competitively. We are excited to welcome Tim on staff this summer as our Kayak Instructor.
